What is the UGSRC Nokofioo Initiative?

The UGSRC Nokofioo Initiative is one of the programmes under the UGSRC Welfare Scheme. It provides extra funds to students who need help paying their fees. What is the Vice Chancellor’s One Student – One Laptop Initiative?

The Vice-Chancellor’s One Student-One Laptop Initiative is an initiative of the Vice-Chancellor that provides laptops to eligible students to enhance their learning experience, facilitate their access to digital resources, and help with their studies. To contribute to the sustainability of the programme, and to ensure that more students are provided with laptops, the UGSRC Welfare Scheme donates at least hundred laptops to the Vice-Chancellor’s office every academic year, for onward distribution to eligible students.

What is the Dean’s Food Bank Project?

The Dean’s Food Bank Project is an initiative of the Dean of Student Affairs that provides food and provisioning items to students who need them. The aim of the programme is to alleviate food insecurity amongst students.

What is the Education Assurance Plan?

The Education Assurance Plan is a comprehensive life insurance policy for all undergraduate students at the University of Ghana. It offers financial security and support to students and their families in case of unfortunate events such as the death or total permanent disability of a student’s fee-paying parent or guardian, or the death of the student. The aim is to alleviate the financial burden faced by students and their families during times of tragedy, assure the student’s education, and contribute to their overall welfare.

How do I get enrolled onto the Education Assurance Plan?

As an undergraduate student, you are automatically enrolled onto the Education Assurance Plan once you pay your academic fees. All you need to do to benefit from the plan in the case any of the assured unfortunate events occurs, is to make a claim for benefits here, and the benefits will be paid to you.

What unfortunate events does the Education Assurance Plan cover?

The Education Assurance Plan covers the following unfortunate events: 

  1. Death of the sponsor (parent or guardian) of the student’s education. 
  2. Total permanent disability of the sponsor (parent or guardian) of the student’s education. 
  3. Death of the student.
What benefits are available for claim under the Education Assurance Plan?

The following benefits are available for claim under the Education Assurance Plan:

  • Death or Total Permanent Disability of Sponsor (Parent/Guardian)

If you lose the sponsor (parent or guardian) of your education to death, or if he or she becomes totally permanently disabled, the following benefits are available to you:

  • Up to GHS 7,500.00 of your outstanding academic fees paid to the University every academic year till you complete school; and
  • GHS 3,500.00 paid to you every academic year till you complete school, whether you are a resident or nonresident student, to help you pay for your accommodation fees.
  • Death of Student

If a student unfortunately passes on, the following funeral benefit is available for claim by the student’s family:

  • GHS 2,000.00 to support the family with the student’s funeral expenses.
Can I apply for multiple assistance programmes under the Welfare Scheme?

Yes, you can apply for multiple assistance if you meet the eligibility criteria. However, you should note that the disbursement of assistance is subject to you meeting the eligibility criteria of the various initiatives and the availability of funds to assist you with your need.

Are the benefits of the Education Assurance Plan taxable?

No, the benefits under the Education Assurance Plan are not taxable.

Can international students apply for assistance from the UGSRC Welfare Scheme?

Yes, the Welfare Scheme is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Ghana, including international students.
