History

The UGSRC Welfare Scheme traces its roots back to the collaborative efforts of the 2022/23 administrations of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) Executive Council and General Assembly, the executive and parliamentary organs of the UGSRC. In 2022/23, SRC President Martin Gyasi Boakye and SRC General Assembly Speaker Ramzy Ahmad Fuseini recognized the multifaceted welfare needs of students. To address these needs, they established a collaborative working group tasked with gathering ideas from various stakeholders to propose a comprehensive welfare program for students at the University of Ghana.

Chairing this working group was project consultant Mr. Divine Edem Kwadzodeh, Managing Director of Dekklatt Limited, who is also a former Junior Common Room President at the Alexander Adum Kwapong Hall and a former General Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). The group, consisting of General Assembly members, Executive Committee members, former student leaders, and current students, worked diligently to craft a proposal that would become the foundation of the UGSRC Welfare Scheme.

The proposal underwent a thorough development process, incorporating inputs from Junior Common Rooms, Departmental/School Student Associations, the SRC General Assembly, the Association of Students with Special Needs, the Distance Education Students Association, Junior Common Rooms at the Korle Bu Campus, and various university units and offices. The Regulations formalizing the UGSRC Welfare Scheme were officially approved by the General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the UGSRC, on April 26, 2023. After extensive reviews, the proposal received final approval from the SRC General Assembly, University Management, and the Governing Council of the University.

The inaugural ceremony for the Welfare Scheme’s Governing Board took place on December 19, 2023, at the Old Council Chamber of the University. During this event, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana responsible for Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, inaugurated the Board, marking the soft launch of the Scheme and the commencement of its operations.
